Nonimmigrant Visas

A nonimmigrant visa (NIV) is a U.S. document that is attached to a foreign national’s passport, which describes the type of visa issued. A nonimmigrant visa authorizes a foreign national to be lawfully admitted to the U.S. for temporary travel during a specified period. Familiar types of nonimmigrant visas issued for travel to the U.S. are to tourists, business travelers, students or temporary specialty workers and exchange program participants.

A nonimmigrant may not work in the U.S. unless the visa issued authorizes lawful employment in the U.S
